Everett was the first of seven children born to Minnie Harp and Dr. Stephen D. Melton, who already had nine children from his first wife. He was born in Spokane, Missouri and married Susie Ann Casey on May 12, 1928. They were the parents of two daughters and one son. He died Oct. 8, 1976 in Joplin and is buried at Osborne Memorial Cemetery.
