William was the second child of Joseph C. and Margaret Irwin Alton. He was born at Belfast, Ashfield Co., Ontario. After marrying Janet Torie he farmed in the pioneer fashion near Parry Sound.
Seven children were born: Elizabeth Lovel born on March 18,1885 and passed away April 10, 1886; Bertha born November 19, 1886; John Arthur born May 17, 1888; Margaret born May 13, 1891 married Lew Roberts and died in 1914; Susan Jessie born March 23, 1893; Janet born November 21 1896 passed away Jan 27, 1897; Willmot born Feb 20, 1901.
In 1900 William, together with brothers Jim, John and Joe moved to Alberta. He Purchased N.W. 1/4 section 5,twp 54, Rge 21, W He farmed the land until 1906 when he rented the farm and moved to Lamont where he worked for the Government Bridge Builders Company. In 1910 the family moved to Edmonton and resided there until 1914 when he moved back to the farm and farmed until 1925. His son Wilmot took over the farm.
William remarried his cousin, Louise J Alton Hunter and lived for a time at Hanna with her and later moved to Lamont and passed away at 89 years.
