Thomas apprenticed as a blacksmith and he also did some machine work. He married Jennie Holbert on Nov 29, 1893 at Burk's Falls, Ontario.
In I896 he left Ontario and moved to British Columbia going to work with his brother Dan at Bridge building for the C.P.R. However, he did not care for that type of work so he started a blacksmith shop at Golden, B.C. Around the year 1900 he sold his shop to a Mr. McCaddy and moved down the Columbia valley to Harrowgate and took up a homestead. It was here that he obtained a very small sawmill. He left Harrowgate and then to Spillimachine, back to Harrowgate and later to Parson. Tom Alton had his mill burn three times, rebuilding it each time.
One son, Leslie George was born in Ontario. The remainder of the family were all born in B.C.
