James Henry Alton was the first son of Joseph Caleb Alton and Margaret Irwin. James H. started farming in the Bloomfield
County. He married Mary Jane Phillips and They had five children Margaret, William, Elizabeth, Beatrice Annie and Thomas.
In the winter of l892 - 93 he moved to Burk's Falls where
he bought a woodworking building where he built sleighs for bush work as well as general woodworking.
It was during his residence at Burk's Falls that his first
wife Mary Jane died and he later married Ida Mae Bowen.
In 1900 he moved with brothers William, John, Joe and their families, to Strathcona, arriving on the 13th of April. The
brothers started farming east and north on Partridge Hills,
Alberta, but James stayed in Strathcona finding plenty of carpentry work, as well as repairing buggies, wagons, etc. During 1907 James was appointed foreman of street repair and building and later was foreman of Bridges and Culverts. He worked for the City of Edmonton until he passed away.
