CHARLES HOWARD [Uncle 'Bud' ] was one of our favourites, born in 1873. He called me 'Peeto' because I couldn't say my pet rabbit's name, Peter properly and I guess he got a kick out of my accent. He also used to visit us on Sundays [lived in Ottawa in the winter] and always turned up with a 25-cent bag of candy from old Mr, Trottier's store on Main Street , now the entrance to the Bamboo Restaurant. I sure looked forward to his visits. He smoked a pipe and had a squint that gave him quite an air of savoir faire. He was a millwright for the Davidson's Lumber company and spent the summer up at Davidson. Every summer we would take a trek up to see them and stay overnight. I still remember the shells that were company houses, painted red, on a sandy strip between the main road and the river at the foot of the mill. It was hot as blazes to sleep upstairs in these dwellings, not to speak of being unmercifully bitten by sand fleas. Their two children, Cecil and Rhoda used to come to stay with us on the farm during vacation.

-Ethel May Moore Guertin on her uncle.
