Killed in Auto Accident

John Jackson Loy, 74, was killed instantly at 9:20 a.m. Monday morning in a car & truck crash on Rte 67, 2 miles north of Rockbridge. William Wolfe, coroner of Greene County, has scheduled an inquest to be held on Tuesday evening, Sept. 23, at the Shields Funeral Home in Greenfield.

Injured in the accident was Gene Janssen, 18, of Golden, Illinois. He was moved to Boyd Memorial Hospital in Carrollton where examination revealed that he had suffered leg & head injuries. State Patrolmen Wilson Schultz & Stoke Blackorby covered the accident. According to information given the officers, Mr. Loy had been to Greenfield where he had a tire fixed for a combine and was enroute to his home. Janssen was returning to his home following a trip to the East St. Louis market. It is reported that Loy had pulled almost off the highway before the vehicles collided. A cousin of Janssen was driving a truck ahead of him.

The body of Mr. Loy was brought to Jacoby Brothers in Jerseyville from the Shields Home in Greenfield, and was later taken to the family residence in Rockbridge where friends called. Funeral services were held at 2:00 Wednesday afternoon at the Pentacostal Church in Rockbridge. Rev. George Wooden of East Alton officiated and burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield.

Mr. Loy was born in Greene County, June 16, 1884, a son of the late William & Angeline Portwood Loy. His age at the time of death was seventy four years, two months and twenty nine days. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Alice Loy; two daughters, Mrs. Earthy (Paschia) Huff of Rockbridge, and Mrs. Dale (Faye) Short of White Hall; six sons, Alfred, Theron and Homer Loy of Greenfield; Melvin Loy of Medora, John Loy of Alton and Nelson Loy of Brighton; 19 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Mrs. Nellie Frank of Jerseyville and Mrs. Rollie Feldjes of Medora; and 6 brothers, Frank Loy of Jerseyville, Oliver, Louis and George Loy of Medora, James Loy of Rockbridge and Tony Loy of Chesterfield.
