Gladys Elizabeth Askren Green was the daughter of Charles Mitchell Askren and Ida Jane Kintner Askren. She was the sister of Arch, John, Smith, Zelma, Daniel and Minnie Askren. When she was 13, Gladys lost her little sister, mother and big brother, Arch from different illnesses. Just a few weeks after her brother died, she married his best frient, Harry W. Green. She was the mother of Delmar Wilbur, Denny Norman, Bonnie Evelyn, Melvin Francis, Gay Ina and three infants who died at birth. She wrote poetry and was published in the local newspaper. She was very creative and was a wonderful grandmother to me. She was a wonderful cook, delicious fried chicken, and home made relishes and a root cellar full of canned green beans, peaches and pickles. She taught me how to braid and I would sit on her lap and we would read the funny papers and the Grit magazine. We made candy and she would always give me a cup of coffee to dip my vanilla wafers into and a glass of water on the side to put my fingers in so they would't burn from the coffee. I was constantly at her side and she let me help her do everything from laundry to wrapping presents. I have only good memories about her. She was the best of the best of grandmas.
