Harry was the oldest child of Frederick Green and Emma J. Houghton Green. He had two younger sisters, Victoria I. and Ola. @1902 Harry's father died and his mother remarried John Frank Carroll. She died in 1904 and her children were raised by three different families. Harry was taken in by George & Fanny Getz along with their daughter Maude. They treated him well and he helped them with the farm work. Harry joined the military and was sent to the Canal Zone while the Panama Canal was under construction. He went to Barber School in California and worked in a barber shop with Blanche Eckart (she was the sister in law of Harry's sister, Ola) in San Francisco. He then later returned in 1922 to Indiana and married his best friend's little sister, Gladys Askren in 1923. He and Gladys had five living children and three stillborns. Delmar, Denny, Bonnie, Melvin and Gay were their children's names. Harry opened a barber shop in Corydon, IN. For a while the whole family lived in the back of the shop but later they moved to New Middletown on what is now called Fogal Road. He opened a little barber shop in New Middletown, IN when he was older. He was a quiet man and never seemed to get upset. He liked to watch boxing on tv. He always wore a bow tie and would sit in a straight back chair backwards. He never talked about his childhood. He never spoke of his days in the military. He never talked about himself. He worked hard. He planted a big garden and grandma canned all sorts of vegetables and fruit. He made me a little bird cage to carry my parakeet back and forth between thier home and mine. I still have it. He was a good man.
