"Dock" was the son of John A. Compton and Cora French. He was a locomotive fireman for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Company, and was mentioned in "The C&O Freight and Section Crew Wreck," a broadside ballad about a wreck in the Big Sandy Valley, in eastern Kentucky. He lived in Paintsville, KY in 1951. He never married.
