The family later moved to New Hampton, Iowa, where she graduated from New Hampton High School in 1942. After high school, she worked as a dental assistant in New Hampton until 1944 when she moved to Long Island, New York, to marry her high school sweetheart, Floyd Fliger, who was in the Navy stationed at Montauk Point.
After Dad shipped out, Mom returned to New Hampton to be near family while awaiting the birth of their first child. Floyd David "Dave" was born in April 1945. Soon after Dad was discharged in December 1946, the young family moved to Sheldon, Iowa, and then to Humboldt, Iowa, where Dad worked as a linotype operator, and Mom was a self-employed seamstress. She made several lovely wedding gowns during this time. Their second child, Jane Marie, was born when they lived in Humboldt.
In 1953, we moved to Iowa City, Iowa, so Dad could use the GI Bill to attend college. At first, we lived in a quonset hut on the parking lot of the university football stadium until an older lady offer us the second floor of her two-story home. Mom worked as a seamstress doing alterations in a dress shop and alterations and repairs at a dry cleaning shop.
