John was born September 2, 1935 in Calmar, Iowa, the son of Leonard and Elizabeth (Schneider) Schlindwein. He graduated from the New Hampton (Iowa) High School in 1953. On October 9, 1953 in Des Moines, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served until October 2, 1955 at which time he was honorably discharged. John was employed by the former Rath Packing Company in Waterloo from 1956 to 1970.
In April 1956 he married Patricia Boerjan. They later divorced. John owned the Golden Garter in Waterloo and sold Combined Insurance for a brief period.
On December 30, 1971, he married Joyce (Drewlow) Ward. In 1971, John built the Village Inn in New Hampton. John moved to Iowa City in 1988 and lived also in Waterloo a year before moving to Las Vegas in 1989.
John is survived by Joyce Schlindwein of Las Vegas, NV; four daughters; Diann Droste (Charles) of Waterloo; DeLonn McCall (David) of Houston, TX; Donna Ferguson (James) of Kerrville, TX; two sons Jack Schlindwein of Waterloo and Joe Schlindwein (Rene) of Grand Rapids, MI; one step-daughter Julie Schmitz (Dan) of Rochester, MN; on step-son Tom Ward of Frederickburg; 15 grandchildren; three brothers James Schlindwein of Houston, TX; Dick Schlindwein of West Des Moines, IA; Bob Schlindwein of Arizona; one sister Mary Fliger of Sunrise Beach, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sister, Dorothy Murray, Betty Ramsey, Margaret Doyle, and Marjorie Schlindwein; three brothers, Leonard, Paul and Donald Schlindwein; one granddaughter, Flori McCall.
