Dewey James Soren, age 84 of Ferndale, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2014.

He was born in Hamilton on January 6, 1930 to Dewey and Jessie (Wilson) Soren, and was celebrated as the "New Year's Baby."
Raised in Skagit County along with brother, Ray, and sisters, Dorothy, Helen and Mina, Dewey was affectionately known as "Gus" in his younger days.

He graduated from Sedro Woolley High School in 1949, lettering in baseball and basketball.

In 1952, he married Emily Mani and they had four children - Shirlee, Steven, Sherry and Debbie. After they divorced, he married Josephine Wyngaert in 1960, and they had two children Kathy and Chris.

Dewey (Gus) worked as head of maintenance for Simplot and operated a small farm growing crops and raising cattle and horses. Retiring from Simplot in 1994, he later enjoyed working on his farm, going to livestock auctions, traveling and playing craps at the local casino.

Dewey (Gus) was preceded in death by wife, Josephine, in 2007; daughter Shirlee Schmidt in 2002; brother Ray; sisters Dorothy Ekman, Helen Allison, and Mina Soren.

Dewey (Gus) is survived by sons Steven Soren of Sedro Woolley, and Chris (Ana) Soren of Ferndale; daughters Sherry (Blake) Van Fleet of Sedro Woolley, Debbie Soren of Marysville, and Kathy (Chad) Chambers of Lynden; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; first wife Emily Good; brother Lou (Darlene) Wyngaert; sisters-in-law Fran Wyngaert, Diane Wyngaert, and Margaret Wyngaert; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A time of visitation will be 9:00 to 10:00 AM, Friday, November 21, 2014 at Gillies Funeral Home, 202 Front St., Lynden followed by an 11:00 AM graveside service at Enterprise Cemetery, 7041 Vista Dr., Ferndale. Coffee and treats will be served at Dewey's home, 2963 Brown Rd., Ferndale.
