Wilma was the 8th child of Arie C. and Jaantje "Jane" (DeBruin) De Jong. She had 11 siblings - Mary, John, Martin, Richard, Margaret, Jacob, Peter, William, Gerrit, Herman and Anna. This farm family lived on rented farms in Richland and Prairie Townships in Mahaska County, Iowa. In 1914 when Wilma was 12 years old, they purchased their own farm. Her family was one of the founding families of the Peoria Christian Reformed Church. Wilma attended school to the 8th grade.

January 2, 1925 Wilma married John D. De Young in Peoria, Iowa. He was the son of Daila and Nellie (Schellenburg) De Young, also a farm family.

Wilma and John had 6 children -

Dale Arthur born May 16, 1926 who married Mary Meyer Apr 2, 1954. He died Jan 1, 1990.

Janice Nell born July 11, 1927 who later married George Brodsky.

Marilyn born Apr 1, 1930 who married Marion Vander Linden on Mar 11, 1950.

Lois Faye born Apr 29, 1933 who later married David De Jong.

Marcia Jean born Jan. 4, 1935 who later married Al Te Winkle.

Wilma Joan born July 19, 1941 who later married Bill Nebbelink.

In 1917 John was a farm laborer for Wilma's brother, Gerrit. He registered for the draft saying that his parents needed partial support from him. Later, in 1935 and 1940, Wilma and John rented their own farm in Richland, Mahaska County, Iowa.
