Herman Anthony was the eleventh of twelve children born to Arie C. and Jaantje "Jane" (De Bruin) De Jong. This was a farm family having horses, cattle, pigs, and chickens on their farm. They rented farms in the Prairie and Richland Townships in Mahaska County, Iowa until Herman was sixteen years old. Then his parents bought their own farm in the Peoria area.

The family was one of several to found the Peoria Christian Reformed Church where his father was a leader in the church.

Herman's siblings were Mary, John, Martin, Richard, Margaret, Jacob, Peter, Wilma, William, Gerrit, and Anna.

February 16, 1939 Herman married Catherine Vander Linden, daughter of Carl and Nellie Vander Linden. Her parents farmed in the same area as Herman's - Mahaska County.

Herman and Catherine had four children -

Arlene born Dec. 11, 1939 who married Allen Vander Wey on June 22, 1962, then married Jerome Nichols on August 27, 1966.
