Richard was the fourth of 12 children born to Arie C. and Jaantje "Jane" (De Bruin). His siblings were Mary, John, Martin, Margaret, Jacob, Peter, Wilma, William, Gerrit, Herman and Anna. They were a farm family renting farms until July of 1914 when they purchased their own farm near Peoria. This family along with some others were instrumental in founding the Peoria Christian Reformed Church.

December 26, 1917 he married Emma Sjaardema in Sully IA. They farmed for a couple years, then Richard attended Grundy Center Junior College, graduating in 1925. He then went on to Western Theological Seminary in Holland MI and graduated in 1928.

He served as pastor of the Covenant Reformed Church in Indianapolis IN, then moved to Artisia CA, and on to Knoxville KY. He then returned to Sully where he pastored First Reformed Church and gave Bible instruction at the High School.
He was a member of the Sully Community Club and enjoyed woodworking using a lathe. His final parish was at First Reformed Church in Pella IA.

Richard passed away in the Pella Hospital.
