Martin was born to Arie C. and Jaantje (Jane)(deBruin) deJong in Mahaska County. Iowa Births and Christenings as well as Martin's registration for the draft for WWI both state that his birth year was 1891. His family farmed a couple farms in this area and in 1914 purchased their own farm near Peoria in an area known as Lower Grove.

Martin had 11 siblings - Mary, John, Richard, Margaret, Jacob, Peter, Wilma, William, Gerrit, Herman, and Anna.

When Martin was about 1 1/2 years old, his family along with 16 other families organized the Peoria Christian Reformed Church.

February 8, 1917 Martin married Lena Vander Scaaf. They had two children. Janet Margaret was born Feb. 9, 1918. She married Jim Shade on June 17, 1947. Martin Arie (Bats) was born June 15, 1920. He married Minnie Nikkel on May 7, 1943.

Martin suffered a bout of influenza which caused his unexpected death at 27 years old. He left his wife, an unborn child and a 2 year daughter.
