Peter was born to Arie C. and Jaantje "Jane" (De Bruin) De Jong on a farm in Mahaska County, Iowa. The family rented farms in Richland and Prairie Townships until 1914 when they purchased their own farm, They had cattle, horses, pigs and chickens. Peter and his brothers all helped out on the farm as soon as they were old enough. Peter had 11 siblings - Mary, John, Martin, Richard, Margaret, Jacob, Wilma, William, Gerrit, Herman and Anna.

On August 24, 1928, Peter married Anna Vander Scaaf (sometimes spelled Vander Schaaf). Anna was the daughter of George and Maggie and was born in Patterson, New Jersey.

Peter and Anna had 6 children -

Jane Ann born Jul 26, 1929 and married Forrest Van Oss Aug 15, 1958.

Shirma Mae born Feb 26, 1932 and married Philip Huizenga on Aug 1, 1958.

Arthur Jay born Feb 24, 1934 and married Joyce Van Doorn on Dec 21, 1957.

Peter Junior born July 22, 1937 who married Marcia Baldwin on Jun 4, 1959. He died Mar 20, 1997.

Mary Lois born Jan 5, 1939 and married Roy Trevisan Sep 14, 1979.

Marvin Lee born Jan 5, 1939 who married Donna Goemaat on Dec 21, 1958. They divorced in May 1986 and he married Claudia Thomas on Dec 21, 1994.

Peter was a minister in the Reformed Church of America serving in churches in Patterson, New Jersey; Jamestown, Kalamazoo, Hudsonville, and Allendale in Michigan; and Sioux Center and Leighton in Iowa.

He died in Pella from prostate cancer at the age of 79.
