John was the son of Dirk and Neeltje (Nellie) (Schouwenburg) De Jong. Dirk and Neeltje immigrated with 6 children to Iowa on the SS Edam, landing in New York on 25 October, 1893. John was born in Marion County, Iowa about a year and a half later.

I have not been able to locate very much information about John as a child. The census records say he attended school to the 6th/7th grade. He registered for the draft for WWI in 1917. At that time he was partially supporting his parents by working on the farm of Gerrit De Jong. He was of medium height and build, had dark blue eyes and light brown hair.

At this time there were numerous John DeJongs who lived in the Pella area, so this John changed the spelling of his last name to DeYoung.

Jan. 2, 1925, John married Wilma De Jong, sister of Gerrit. John and Wilma were no blood relation. She was the daughter of Arie C. and Jaantje "Jane" (De Bruin). They had six children -

Dale Arthur born May 16, 1926 who married Mary Meyer on Apr. 2, 1954. Dale passed away Jan 1, 1990 in Pella IA.

Janice Nell born July 11, 1927 who later married George Brodsky.

Marilyn born Apr 1, 1930 who married Marion Vander Linden on Mar 11, 1950.

Lois Faye born Apr 29, 1933 who later married David De Jong.

Marcia Jean born Jan 4, 1935 who later married Al Te Winkle.

Wilma Joan born July 19, 1941 who later married Bill Nibbelink.

By 1935/1940 John and Wilma were renting a farm in the Richland, Mahaska County, IA area.

He was 93 years old when he died in Pella IA
