John was the second of nine children born to Jonas More and Deborah Person More. He was raised at Roxbury where his father was a prominent farmer and citizen. John married to Olive Peck on 21 December 1820 at Roxbury. Soon after their marriage, he purchased a portion of his father’s farm above Roxbury village and they resided there permanently. He also had a grist mill and many a man went home with more than he brought. John and Olive were the parents of nine children; Jonas Richard More, Deborah Permelia More, Liberty Preston More, Watson Dennis More, Philena Amanda More, Addison Porter More, Mary Elizabeth More, Harriet Jane More, and Owen Wickes More.
