Owen attended every John More Association reunion held during his lifetime. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living 'cousin' to have had a personal recollection of John More. He attended the district school and Roxbury Academy. In the spring of 1860, he worked as a grocery store clerk at Rosendale, New York and in 1861 at Durham where he went into the mercantile business with his brothers. In 1862, during the Civil War, he enlisted in the army and was a private in Company H, 144th Regiment, New York State Volunteer Infantry. He mustered out in 1865 and returned to his brothers' store to work. His father called him home in 1866, where he worked on his father's farm until his father's death and the estate was settled. Owen returned to Durham again and on 8 October 1873, he married to Julia Munger at Durham. He bought his brother's farm, Locust Grove Farm, and he and his wife lived there permanently. He had been Deputy Sheriff and Constable and held the office of Assessor until 1893.
