Jonas was the eighth of nine children born to Jonas More and Deborah Person More. He was raised at Roxbury where his father was a prominent farmer. When he was two and one-half years of age, he fell into a well. He was rescued but was partially deaf ever after. Jonas attended the Central Asylum for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb at Canajoharie, New York from 1830 to 1834. Upon his return to Roxbury, he worked as a farm laborer throughout the area. He retired about 1870, and until his death, he was cared for by his niece, Maria DuBois Burhans, who had married to George Wilson Lauren. Jonas never married.
