Rebecca was the daughter of John Jackson and Amy Watson and presumably born in Gloucester Co., NJ. Her gravestone gives her age at death as 82 years, 1 month & 6 days. This would put her birth at about 15 Oct. 1789. However, her parents were not married until 1790, and at least one source puts Rebecca's birth in about 1791/92 (she is listed as aged 68 in the 1860 Census). Considering this, I am showing her birth year as 1790. This might also help to explain her father's protest at her marriage in June 1807 (see below), as she might have been only 15 or 16 years old then.

Rebecca married William Hewitt on 12 June 1807 in Gloucester Co., NJ. Both parties were residents of (old) Greenwich Twp., Gloucester Co., at the time of marriage. Her father brought charges against the marriage officiant, Justice of the Peace William Zane, for having performed the marriage of his underage daughter without his permission. A marriage age of 17 or 18 would not have been atypical at that time (though still technically underaged). However, 15 or 16 would probably have been considered young, and therefore perhaps warranting explicit parental consent in her father's eyes.

Rebecca and William appear to have had at least eight children, as follows:

1. John Jackson Hewitt, born 23 Jun 1807 [his birth date also explaining the urgency of the parents' marriage]--linked below;
2. Jesse Hewitt, born abt 1810, married Ann Seran;
3. Harriet Hewitt, born 11 July 1812--linked below;
4. presumed daughter, born 1815-20 (based on 1830 Census);
5. presumed daughter, born 1815-20 (based on 1830 Census);
6. presumed daughter, born 1815-20 (based on 1830 Census);
7. Andrew C. Hewitt, born 18 June 1826--linked below; and
8. Samuel Hewitt, apparent son (see below), born abt 1838--linked below.

The three presumed daughters may have been named Amy, Rebecca, and Katie based on family trees. However, no other documentation of these names has been found to date.

Relative to Samuel Hewitt (also Huet/Huett), the last child in the list above, he was living with Rebecca and William in 1850 and is accounted for (as a male, aged under 5 years) in the household in 1840. He was involved in land transactions with them in 1863 and 1865. However, since the 1850 Census does not state relationships within the household, and no documentation has been found indicating (directly) that Samuel was William and Rebecca's son, his parentage is not considered proven. DNA matches between his descendants and other Jackson/Hewitt descendants indicate that he must have been Rebecca's son or grandson. If he was Rebecca's son, and was really born about 1838-39, then this may be further indication that she was a few years younger at death than her gravestone states. That is, if she was born in 1790 or 1791 (as suggested above) and Samuel was born in 1838, she would have been 46-48 years old at the time of his birth.
