John was the son of William Hewitt and Rebecca Jackson, and named for his maternal grandfather John Jackson. He was a carpenter, and married Ruth Ann Jess on 10 Nov. 1832 in Woodstown, Salem Co., NJ. They had at least 7 children, as follows:

1) Rebecca, born abt. Dec. 1835--linked below.
2) Harriet "Hattie," born 21 Feb 1841--link pending.
3) Ananias R., born June 1843--linked below.
4) Jesse Elmer, born 16 Apr. 1846--linked below.
5) William, born 1850, died Sep 1850
6) Hannahretta, born about 1852, reportedly died 1923 in Clayton, NJ (married?).
7) Ruth Ann, born about 1854--linked below.
8) Lydia Elizabeth, born 3 Dec. 1857.
