Sammie C. Powers, 79, of Athens, and formerly of Decatur, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
He was a member of the United Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Malissa Clark Powers; his wife, Geraldine Powers; one son, Danny Powers; two great-grandsons, Austin Cofer and Ryan Hughes; four brothers; and four sisters.
Survivors include five sons and daughters-in-law, C.M. and Patsy Powers of Ringold, Ga., Billy and Reba Powers of Niota, Sam and Robin Powers and Luke and Glenda Powers, all of Cleveland, and Terry and Donna Powers of Georgetown; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Debbie and Kenny Cofer of Georgetown, Louise Brogden of Athens, Delilah and Randall Baine of Cleveland, and Brenda and Jim Ledford of McDonald; one brother and sister-in-law, Ammie and Sue Powers of Crossville; 38 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Bowers Funeral Home with the Rev. Toby Brogden and the Rev. Jack James officiating. Burial will follow in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, Keith Ledford, Chris and Rody Powers, Phillip and Todd Hughes, and friend, David Scroggins.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Bowers Funeral Home of Decatur is in charge of arrangements.
