William Holloway Powers served as a private in Company E, 57th Pioneer Infantry during World War I. Pioneer Infantry set sail September 29, 1918 on the Transport Ship SS Leviathan from New York to Brest, France. During this voyage, the worst in-transit outbreak of Spanish Flu occurred. William Holloway Powers reportedly died of pneumonia on 7 October 1918 at sea, the day before the ship arrived in France. His body was returned to the United States on the return trip.
