Malissa Catherine Clark was the daughter of Joseph Richard Tate Clark and his first wife, Susan Frances (Sneed) Clark. She was named in honor of her paternal grandmother, Parthenia Malissa (Robinson) Clark; and her maternal grandmother, Catherine Lucretia (Willhite) Sneed. Malissa Clark was the second wife of William Hardin Powers. They were married 12 Jan 1902 in Meigs Co., TN (Meigs Co., TN Marriage Book, volume 1, p. 406)

William Hardin Powers and his second wife, Malissa, had the following children: Sidney Belle, Charles Floyd, Henry Stephen, Amanda Estelle, Jesse Eugene, Carrie Mae, Dorothy Edna, Carl Sevier, Sammie Coolidge, and Ammie Dawes Powers (twin of Sammie).

Sammie Coolidge Powers was named in honor of an uncle (Samuel, brother of William Hardin Powers) and President Calvin Coolidge.

The distinctive name Ammie is a variant spelling of Ammi which is Biblical and Hebrew in origin (American portrait painter Ammi Phillips was similarly named); the middle name of Ammie Dawes Powers was bestowed in honor of Vice-President Charles Dawes.
