Robert served as a Staff Sergeant & Left Waist Gunner on B-17 "Holy Mackeral" (#42-3265), 337th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.
He resided in Manatee County, Florida prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 8, 1942 at Camp Blanding, Florida. He was noted as being employed as an Office Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
Robert was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17, while returning from a bombing mission to Bremen, Germany, was hit by enemy flak which caused explosions on his plane and the pilot lost all control due to the damage.
The "Holy Mackeral" ended up running into B-17 (#42-30860) causing them to crash into the Wadden Sea (North Sea). The "Holy Mackeral" also ended up in a crash landing at Kimewerd, South of Harlingen, Holland.
Robert was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
