Ewing served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on B-17 "Holy Mackeral" (#42-3265), 337th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Louisiana prior to the war.

Ewing was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, while returning from a bombing mission to Bremen, Germany, was hit by enemy flak which caused explosions on his plane and he lost all control due to the damage.

The "Holy Mackeral" ended up running into B-17 (#42-30860) causing them to crash into the Wadden Sea (North Sea). The "Holy Mackeral" also ended up in a crash landing at Kimewerd, South of Harlingen, Holland.

Ewing was awarded the Purple Heart.

1st Lt Ewing J. Le Blanc attended South Western Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana for 2 years. He was an architect. He joined the Air Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in new Orleans, Louisiana on 19 May 1942.

When the B-17 #42-30860 was attacked by fighters, witnesses saw it exploded and, when going down, colliding with #42-3265 between the Dutch mainland and the Frisian Islands east o f Texel.

Nine crew members were killed, one survived and was taken prisoner.
