John served as a Staff Sergeant & Right Waist Gunner on B-17 "Holy Mackeral" (#42-3265), 337th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 30, 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Telegraph Messenger and also as Single, without dependents.

John was "Killed In Action" when his B-17, while returning from a bombing mission to Bremen, Germany, was hit by enemy flak which caused explosions on his plane and the pilot lost all control due to the damage.

The "Holy Mackeral" ended up running into B-17 (#42-30860) causing them to crash into the Wadden Sea (North Sea). The "Holy Mackeral" also ended up in a crash landing at Kimewerd, South of Harlingen, Holland.

John was awarded the Purple Heart.
