George served as a Staff Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17 "Holy Mackeral" (#42-3265), 337th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.


He resided in Providence County, Rhode Island prior to the war.


He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 27, 1942 in Providence, Rhode Island. He was noted as being employed as a mechanic and also as Single, with dependents. Cenotaph in Rhode Island here


George was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17, while returning from a bombing mission to Bremen, Germany, was hit by enemy flak which caused explosions on his plane and the pilot lost all control due to the damage.


The "Holy Mackeral" ended up running into B-17 (#42-30860) causing them to crash into the Wadden Sea (North Sea). The "Holy Mackeral" also ended up in a crash landing at Kimewerd, South of Harlingen, Holland.


George was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
