Andrew is the son of Francis "Frank" and Lola Bell (Bruce) Brown. First of eleven children. June 21 1910 Andrew married Alice Latona Poor of Jerseyville, IL. They married in Galesburg, Illinois. The census shows they lived there with his brother Lynn and his wife and also, with his sister Dollie her husband and son.
He worked at a disk factory in Galesburg. My dad told me many stories of his uncles that rode the rails and lived in hobo camps. Grandpa stayed in Jerseyville all his live and after his wife took the children and moved them to Cherokee, OK. Census shows he lived with his mother until his death.
Andrew never owned a car and was known in the area as a champion apple picker among other things. Mom said he liked to sing in the local bars. She also said he was a good and kind man. I was told by Aunt Alice about her dads hijinks with his brothers, how her dad would go out on the weekends drinking and end up in jail. She would walk to the jail and talk to him through the window as a young girl. She laughed when she recalled that. However, the results of his drinking was not funny. During the 1920's he was involved in making mesh or white mule commonly known as moonshine. He was arrested many times. Was charged with drunk and disorderly, abandoning his family, abuse and ordered to pay support the rest of his life. It was after many of his arrest and drinking that Alice left with the children. I have a different view of her now.
His father Frank was a very abusive man to his 11 children and wife. Andrew was forced to go to work in the glass works factory in Alton, IL at the age of 12 or 13, along with his two younger brothers Leander and Lynn. Their heard work and pay went to their father that beat them all, lock them out of the house then go on a bender and drank up every last penny his boys earned. As a young boy he was in trouble stealing in and out of reform school. Was abandon and he and his mom and siblings were living behind the glass works exposed to the weather with little to wear. Mrs. Sophie Demuth a social worker of sorts for the area intervened along with the judge and took the children and put them in new home. Mother Lola was placed in the poor farm she was pregnant with Jessie. This is the life he had from the newspaper articles I found. Was very heart breaking to find. Sharing this with others is not to cause pain but rather to give insight to our family history. If you find alcoholism and abuse in your family, its been in the family for a long time. It's time to break the cycle.
