Alton Evening Telegraph, September 28, 1900: The children of the notorious Frank Brown have been taken from the care of the mother at the poor farm where she has been domiciled since last summer and have been given by Judge Early into the charge of Mrs. S. Demuth who will find homes for them.
Alton Evening Telegraph, October 9, 1900: A warrant has been issued on complaint of a Humane officer for the arrest of Frank Brown on the charge of wife abandonment. Brown returned to Alton today after a long absence and served notice on the police that he intends to sue them for damages for caring for his family and taking charge of his children, who have been provided with homes. Mrs. Brown is in the poor house at the county seat, where she was taken after the family was rescued from the mosquitoes at the camping-out place back of the glass works last summer. When Mrs. Demuth rescued the family they were in a pitiable plight, having been deserted by the father and left in the open air with no covering for them and scanty clothing.
Alton Evening Telegraph, November 2, 1909: MRS. BROWN IN TOWN Is Seeking Four Children She Gave up to Mrs. Demuth and Now Has Three More. A woman, the wife of Frank Brown, known as Lazy Man Brown, was in Alton today looking for four children she gave to Mrs. Demuth four or five years ago. The Browns had a large family of children and the father refused to work, so after he had been properly dealt with the children were taken. Mrs. Demuth refused to tell the mother where the children are. Since she left Alton she has added three more children to her family. Brown is still living and is said to be lazy as ever. The family live in Jerseyville.
