David McKee Lowery was born in County Down, Northern Ireland - the son of Henry Lowery and Alice (Henry) Lowery. He came to America on September 27, 1850 to New York on the ship "New World". He traveled alone and not with any other family members.
He ended up in Newburg, Orange County, New York, and married Mary Leslie of Newburg on March 9, 1853. They had two children while they were in New York (Andrew and Mary Elizabeth), and then moved to Rock County, Wisconsin in about 1856. While in Rock County, they had ten more children (Alice, David J, Eleanor Augusta, Jennie, Jessie Fremont, Evan Grant, Lewis, James Sherman, Frank Robert, and Norman) for a total of twelve children.
David was said to be a very skilled carpenter, having learned the trade in Scotland. When in Rock County, he built houses and barns in the neighborhood, and farmed in Center Township there.
He was a member of the Congregational Church in Center Township, and was much respected in the community. He died at age 73.
