Matilda Hamilton was born 12 June 1828, probably in Lincoln County. Family tradition says she was of Amish heritage, however she was a member of long standing in the Old Nebo Methodist Church at Blanche, TN. Perhaps she joined after her marriage to Benjamin Yarborough Holland on October 14th, 1849 in Madison County, AL. Tildie's parents are unknowns, although there is some slim evidence she is related to Nelson Hamilton of Kentucky who moved to Lincoln County.

After her marraige she lived next to several Hamilton families. Two ladies, Anna age 57 and Narcissa age 52, lived as neighbors in 1850 when she married Benjamin. Both were old enough to possible be her mother. There was also a George, David, and a Henry nearby. As Tildie named three of her children George, David and Henry, she may have been following a family custom of naming children after relatives, the three possibly being her brothers.
***********************************************************
In the 1900 census, Tildie is living with her son Cal at Blanche, TN. Her husband had apparently died somewhere between 1880 and 1900, the exact date is unknown. Tildie passed away June 19th, 1905 at the age of 77 years and 7 days. She is buried at Patterson Cemetery near Coldwater, TN. but the cemetery has been wrecked by time and cattle leaving no headstones.
