VERNON COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY OBITUARY ARTICLE: Charles Appleman
Charles Appleman was born Jan. 2 1875, a son of John and Sarah Appleman. He was one of nine children.
On July 22, 1895, he was united in marriage to Minnie Wilson. This union was blessed with nine children, all of whom survive: Mrs. Zola Calhoun of Beloit, Cortland of La Farge, Verner and Giuford of Waukesha, Mrs. Hershel Young of Baraboo, Mrs. Ella Miller of Westby, Mrs. Edith Mossholder of Sparta, Verlin of Cicero, Ill., and Mrs. Joseph Babbinelli of Fort Bragg, N.C.
Tragedy struck this home when the wife and mother, Minnie suddenly passed away Oct. 19, 1917.
On Jan. 23, 1919, Charlie was married to Mrs. Belle Silbaugh, whose husband had died suddenly, leaving her with a family of six. Now the family consisted of 15 children. This union was blessed with one son, Jim of Cashton.
Charles is also survived by a brother, Sebert of Rockton; two sisters, Mrs. Lutisha Adams of Madison and Mrs. George Jones of Prairie du Chien; 35 grandchildren and 51 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Robert Clark, Mrs. Jim Maxwell, Mrs. William Donovan and Mrs. Jasper Norris and one brother, Jim.
Death came to Charlie Feb. 14, 1958, ending a life of 83 years, 1 month and 12 days, in the same area. Some of the things we shall long remember him for are his wonderful hospitality to everyone who came to his home, a good neighbor, a kind friend, a patriarch to his family, to whom his memory will long be blessed.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Dell EUB church, the Rev. Melvin Nickel and the Rev. Howard White officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Cashton Record
