Youngest of six children born to Jacob and Elizabeth Mumma. Brother of John Mumma, Barbara Houser, Elizabeth Miller, Mary "Polly" Miller and Jacob Mumma, Jr.

Caption on accompanying headstone photo suggests birth year was 1804. It is a fact, however, that his birth year was indeed 1801.

Married Barbara Hertzler on February 21, 1822; parents of five; she died in June 1833. Married Elizabeth Miller on November 15, 1833; parents of eleven.

In September 1862, during the Civil War Battle of Antietam, the Mumma family evacuated their farmstead when it was burned down during the battle. They returned to rebuild. The Hagerstown Herald reported on September 24, 1862, that "...Among the heaviest sufferers of Washington County is Samuel Mumma, Esq., whose house and barn were burned, together with all their contents. They were between the fire of the two armies. We learned that Mr. Mumma lost all his household furniture, including the wardrobe of his family, all his grain, hay and farming implements..."
