Joel Mathew was named after his paternal grandfather Joel Freeman, who married Sarah Mary Lentz. He was named Mathew after his maternal grandfather. Joel Mathew married Ada M. Bland, b: 29 JUL 1877, on Oct. 29, 1898 in Melbourne, Izard Co., AR. Adah was the daughter of Lee A. and Cornelia Helm- Bland. Adah was a sister of Mary J., Effie, Nora Snow, Willie Laura (Smith), and Mauna (Smith). Joel Matthew was a brother to Nancy C. Freeman-Cook-Bivans, David R., John W. "Dutch", Martha J. "Mattie", Sarah "Sack" Freeman-Wood, Mary Susannah "Susie" Freeman-Landers, and Grayson, Ersula, and Iva who died young. His father Jake lived with them until his death in 1914 at the age of 84. Many of Jake and Amanda's family are buried in Vest Cemetery in Boswell, AR. Some have simple unmarked stones, some are inscribed. Joel and Adah raised their nephew Homer T.
