Married Rachel Geneva Skogan on January 15, 1943, at Duluth, Minnesota. Rachel preceded him in death (1971).
He was occupied as a carpenter in Duluth, a member of the Carpenters Union. He retired from J. D. Harold Co. in 1972.
Axel was a member of the Duluth Gospel Tabernacle Church.
Two daughters survive him: Frances and Donna.
