Susan E Brown was born to John Brown and Rachel Peden in Eugene, Vermillion Co. IN. She may have moved to KS. with her brother Benjamin in 1866 or later with her father, from Indiana after her mother died in 1867 to be near her brothers, Alexander and Andrew in Miami Co. KS. Andrew "Andy", later moved to Rooks Co. KS. Her brother Benjamin & family had moved to Miami Co. KS about 1866 and then returned to Indiana about 10 years later.

She married Michael Skaggs in Kansas in about 1871. She was his second wife. His first wife Narcissus Knight was born in the same town, Eugene, Vermillion Co., IN, as Susan was. No doubt they were acquainted and had been in contact by mail, so Susan would have gone to visit at her home, probably after she had died. Unless Susan came earlier than 1867. To this union of Susan and Michael, these known children were born, Clara b. 1872, Otis/Otha/Otta, b. 1875, Lydia b. 1878 and Bertha Skaggs b. 1884. Clara and Lydia died at ages 12 and 6 year, in 1884, perhaps from Typhoid fever as many died from it. After her spouse Michael Skaggs died she moved to Fontana, Miami Co. KS onto a farm as is shown in a KS Census for 1895.

1900 US Census Fontana, Miamie Co. KS. lists Susan, Otis age 25 and Bertha Skaggs age 16. I presume Otis was farming for his mother as his father died in 1892.

In March 1905 the family was living near Fontana, Miami Co. Kansas. The only child at home was Bertha Skaggs. Susan wrote her brother Andrew Brown at Woodston, KS., that she had purchased a lifetime scholarship at the Central Business College in Kansas City for Bertha. Bertha was to leave on the following Monday. Bertha was engaged and went to her future father in-law and told him that her Uncle Andy wanted some Persimmon trees. He said he would dig them up and get them ready to ship. Her future brother in-law also was sending 2 plum trees, 2 maples, 2 flowering lemons and also Sarsenberry. Susan said she needed to get her garden plowed as others had planted their potatoes so she was getting ready to plant her garden. She wrote that she expected it will get hard to hoe as much as she would have that summer. NOTE: I have a copy of this letter.

Susan came to Douglas Co. KS, 5 years before she died, from Parker, Linn Co. KS. She joined the Methodist Church.

Death Place: Cutler Township, Lane, Franklin Co., Kansas where she lived with her daughter Bertha Skaggs Smith.
