Bertha Skaggs was born to Michael Skaggs and Susan E. Brown. She grew up with her siblings, Clara, (Otho/Otta/Otis) and Lydia Skaggs. Bertha and her mother Susan were living near Fontana, Miami Co., KS in 1905, later at Douglas Co. KS. In 1905 Bertha was engaged to a neighbor and was going away to business school. I have a copy of a letter her mother, Susan sent to her brother Andy Brown at Woodston, Rooks Co. KS. telling him about this. I wonder if Bertha worked somewhere after completing her classes at college?

She married Claude Edward Smith on Mar. 2, 1908 in Paola, Miami Co. Kansas. To this union were born these known children, Gerald d. 1909, Infant b. & d. 1910, Princeton E. b. 1913, Lyle V. b. 1914, Infant b. & d. 1918, Hazel b. 1920 d. 1922 and Eugene V. Smith b. 1926. 4 of the children, Gerald, 2 infants and Hazel are buried in the lot of their fathers burial site in Fonatana Cemetery, Fonatana, Kansas.

When her mother Susan E. Skaggs who lived with her, died in 1917, Bertha was the only surviving child of her mother. I have not been able to locate her brother Otis/Otta/Otha Skaggs, b. 1875. He was last shown in the US Census in 1900 at Fontana, Miami Co. KS. at age 25.
