His children were: Mary E., Charles, Margaret A., Rachel, Ellen, Eliza and Herman E.

Benjamin was born in Eugene, Vermillion County, Indiana. He moved to Vermilion County, Illinois, where he met and later married Luellen McEntire on January 12, 1860.

The US 1860 census shows them as married during the year and living right next door to his father John Brown, in Eugene Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. Luellen gave her name for the census as Ellen, which she went by, but later in Kansas she used Luellen. Before 1866, the young family with 2 children moved to Osage Township, Miami County, Kansas, to be near his brother Alexander P. Brown and family, who had arrived in 1857.

Four more children were born in Kansas and then they move back to Vermillion County, Indiana, before 1880 and their son Herman E. was born in 1884.
