Townsend's parents were Charles R. and Elizabeth (Long) Young. Elizabeth was the daughter of Andrew and Letita Long. The minister who married Charles and Elizabeth was name Socrates Townsend. In 1866 when Townsend was 15 years old his father, Charles R., signed him to an apprenticeship contract with Moore Brother's Glass. He continued to work in glass for many years. Townsend married Mary R. Hewitt the daughter of Samuel and Sarah Hewitt. In 1870 they all lived in Clayton, NJ where Townsend was a laborer. Townsend and Mary had 5 children; Charles B. 1870, Claude 1875, Daisy Smoyer 1879 (of Royersford, PA), Samuel 1881 and a daughter, Sarah Lizzie, who died in a fire. In 1880 they lived in Salem Co., NJ. In 1900 they lived in Royersford, PA where Townsend was a glass blower.
