Samuel Long Young was the second son of Charles R Young and Elizabeth Long. He was born and raised in Gloucester County, New Jersey, where he learned the family trade of glass blowing.

On the 19th of November, 1881, he married Ella May Crowley in Vineland, New Jersey. The couple started their family and later moved to Olean, New York, and then on to the Wood River area of Illinois where Samuel worked for the Illinois Glass Company. Samuel and Ella May both died in Wood River, IL.

Samuel and Ella May (Crowley) Young had five known children, but only four of their names are known. They are as follows:

Walter Scott Young - born 12 July 1882 in Clayton, NJ.
Unknown Male Young - born 2 February 1883 in Clayton, NJ.
Charles Albert Young - born 22 August 1886 in Clayton, NJ.
Nellie Young - born Nov 1888 in New Jersey.
Edna M Young - born 1903 in Illinois.
