Samuel Richard Crites, former Monroe assessor and Washington Township trustee, died Monday Oct. 13, 1997, at Bloomington Hospital. He was 61.

Crites, who was a special deputy with the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, served as assessor for three four-year terms, beginning in 1979. He was Washington Township trustee for four years, in the mid 1970's.

He was also the owner and operator of Crites Disposal Service.

Born May 24, 1936 in Monroe County, IN, he was the son of Harry Albert and Mary Ann (Empson) Crites.

An Army veteran, Crites had served in the Indiana National Guard and was a member of the American legion.

Survivors include his wife, Linda (Elkins) Crites; five sons, Samuel Richard Crites II, Jeff Crites, Eddie Grogan, Darin Hupp and Jeff Hupp, all of Bloomington, IN; one daughter Lisha Breeden of Bloomington, IN,; four brothers, Bill Crites of Columbus, Albert Crites of Scottsburg, Bob Crites of Bloomington, and David Crites of Del Norte, CO; three sisters, Virginia Henry of Edinburgh, Pauline Wolff of Belleville, IL, and Margaret
Farris of Spencer; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Crites, in 1979; one son, Anthony Crites and one brother, Paul Crites.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Allen Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael Douglas officiating. Burial will be in the Valhalla Memory Gardens.

Friends may call 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to services Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
