Salvatore J. Barone, 71, died yesterday at Crouse-Irving Memorial Hospital after a long illness. A native of Mount Morris, he was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute, class of 1926. Mr. Barone began work with the State Transportation Department in Hornell in 1930. He moved from Hornell to Syracuse in 1950. Mr. Barone retired in 1966 as senior civil engineer in the bridge design unit. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Church and a member of the New York State Association of Transportation Engineers and the Civil Service Employees Association. Surviving are his wife, Rose J.; four sons, Francis A. of East Syracuse, Robert J. of Baltimore, Md., Edward T. and John G. ; a daughter, Mrs. Stefan L. VanCamp; four brothers, Paul of Dansville, Carl of Rochester, Anthony' and Joseph, both of Mount Morris; three sisters, Mrs. Florence Matteson and Mrs. Joseph Provino, both of Mount Morris, and Mrs. Ross Leta of Rochester; and 12 grandchildren. Services will be at 9:30 a.m.Monday at the Welter Funeral Home, 2649 James St., and at 10 a.m. in St. Vincent de Paul Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Friends may call 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. Contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Church memorial Fund.
