While Bert was originally born in Charleston, MO, the family relocated to Detroit, MI where graduated from elementary and high school. There he also took classes at Wayne State University.
From Michigan, Bert moved to San Francisco where he worked as a correctional officer. He finally settled in Los Angeles working as a Deputy Sheriff for the L.A. county
Not content with his current career, he pursued higher education obtaining a B.A. from Cal. State L.A. and a M.S. from U.S.C. in 1970.
Leaving law enforcement, Bert entered the L.A. Unified School District as a elementary school teacher. He also spent some time as Public Service and Attendance Counselor. He retired after 20 years of service having spent the majority of his career serving the school
district as a school psychologist.
Bert's achievements, which were numerous, included certificates in General Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Adult Education, General School Services and General Administration. In 1972, he placed 3rd out of 83 participants for the Promotional School Psychologists test. As an active member of the Association of Black
Psychologist, he served as their elected treasurer for many years.
