ROBERT JEFFERSON BLOXTON
(May 28, 1848 - August 5, 1903)
He signed his will on May 2, 1903, and he was deceased on August 5, 1903, the probate date.

Robert Jefferson Bloxton was the fifth son of William Ashby Bloxton, and his first son with his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Burton Bloxton.

For some reason, Bob left his first wife behind in Rock Hill, Stafford County, VA, location #184, June 19, 1880 census, with their two children and was listed in Shady Spring, Raleigh County, WV, as a "Carpenter" (age 38, although he was 32) and "single" (Virginia joined him later on in WV, and their son, Claude Robert, was born to them in 1884 in WV). In 1880, he was living with (and probably working for) a couple from England who had a lumber business in WV: John L. & Jane Wilson. Possibly their relative, William H. Wilson took over as Postmaster of Bloxton, WV, on June 9, 1882.

"Robert J. Bloxton" was appointed on September 27, 1881 until June 9, 1882 as Postmaster of "Bloxton, Raleigh County, WV", a hamlet which was named in honor of RJB, where he did a lot of building –- in 1907 it was renamed McCreery, WV. James G. McCreery was appointed Postmaster of Bloxton, WV on Oct. 23, 1884. "McCreery was first known as "Bloxton" for R.J. Bloxton of Hill Top (Fayette Co.)" Nearby towns (five miles East from McKendree): Terry/Teery, Prince (train station, stops there) Quinnimont.

Beckley Post-Herald (Beckley, West Virginia), Friday, August 16, 1974, Page 6: A well-known newspaper columnist from Oak Hill, WV, Rev. Shirley Donnely, wrote an article about ROBERT JEFFERSON BLOXTON; it was included with other information that Alfred Bloxton sent to me. The article is two columns wide and 12-15" long. Rev. Donnely had a column for years in the Raleigh Register (evening paper) and the Beckley Post Herald (morning paper). Ruth kept all his columns. – (Danny & Alfred delivered both papers to earn money.) He wrote, "However, the hamlet there was called Bloxton at first. It was named in honor of the late R.J. BLOXTON, who lived at Hilltop. McCreery was one of the very first settlements in Raleigh County." (The newspaper mistakenly wrote his middle initial as "T".)

R. J. Bloxton was an architect; he built all kinds of buildings in Hilltop and Fayette Co., WV. He built a famous and beautiful opera house that had all kinds of stage shows in Glen Jean, WV, but "he didn't drive every nail in it." He planned the whole thing –- was the boss man. It is no longer standing; it was ¾ mile from Red Star. Alfred doesn't know if it burned down or what.
R. J. built their smaller family home in Hilltop, WV (which burned down after being sold 2-3 times; Beulah only had a photo of the chimney after fire; a family from NY built a nice brick home in its place) after he built the larger home across the road (Beulah had a photo of this house). R. J. built a house for his daughter, Florence "Flossie" Lelia (Mrs. W. Garnet Dickson), by his first wife, which is still standing; it joins the orchard – part of property with a fence between. This house was willed to her in his will of May 2, 1903.

ROBERT JEFFERSON BLOXTON (b. c. 1848, VA--d. c. 1903, WV)
(m. 2nd in ca 1892 in WV,
+ LUCINDA CAROLINE "CINDY" BARTON (b. abt. 1863, WV, d. 1947, age 84, Hilltop, WV). Attended the Methodist Church without missing a service for 40 years. She served for a time as Church Janitor @ $2 a month. She sorely missed going to church the two weeks while all the children were quarantined with Scarlet Fever. Before the church got a piano, they had an old pump organ. When the church got a piano, they gave her the organ when Alfred was 5-6 yrs. old. Alfred, Juanita, and Beulah all learned to play on that organ at Hilltop. They took it with them when they moved to Dewitt, WV. It is upstairs in Alfred's house now. Lucinda had a fireplace in her bedroom. Early the morning she died, she stoked the fire while wearing a long flannel nightgown, got back in bed to get warm before fixing her breakfast, but didn't realize a spark attached to her nightgown, then caught her bedcovers on fire, until she was already on fire. She ran screaming outside and rolled in the snow; a Black neighbor tried to help her and took her to some white neighbors who put her in bed until the ambulance came, but she only lived a matter of hours when they got her to the hospital. Beulah got to the hospital while her grandmother was still conscious, and Lucinda told her what happened before she lost consciousness again. The Hilltop Methodist Church is no longer operating, but the building is still there, and there is a stained glass window with Lucinda Bloxton's name on it.) They had four children together:

4. JAMES WILLIAM BLOXTON (b. 11 JAN 1894, Meadow Bridge, Fayette (near Hinton, Summers County), WV d. age 42, 14 MAY 1936, Huntington Hospital, Cavell County, WV, after being transferred from McKendree Hospital, WV (15 miles from Red Star – railroad goes through there now – nothing there; not on the map anymore). (James played accordian, fiddle, and harmonica, but just for fun. (NOTE: While stationed at Camp Lee, VA – he met a barber or dentist by the name of Bloxton). During WWI (1917-1918), served in the Army Cavalry from WV as a "Horse Soldier", officially a "Clerk for the 155 Depot Brigade" (fell off his horse, broke his foot, and got out a little early because of that), not in good health – but military not a factor. James was 9 years old when his father died, and James died when his son, "ALFRED" was also 9 years old) (m. abt. 1920, in Beckley area (probably Sprague), Raleigh Co., WV to RUTH HESTER SMITH BLOXTON) (b. 25 SEPT 1899, Brooks, Summers County, WV, to MARTHA ELLEN CAMPBELL & OBERT SMITH - d: 5 Nov 1980). (In February, 1931, he moved his family in with Grandmother Lucinda at Hilltop, WV, because he was out of work during the depression. He got some odd jobs, helped to build some houses; two merchants who knew him as a boy gave him work when they had it; he worked on a WPA road project, was given scrap lumber he used to make wooden toys for Christmas sales – he was very resourceful. He helped fix up her house; they raised a garden; they canned; there were strawberries there, an apple orchard, with lots of other fruit trees.) (In 1937, after James died and one month before Juanita died, Ruth Hester brought her children from Lucinda's house in Hilltop to the Dewitt, WV "family home," (1½ miles from Red Star) which still has no running water and is still heated with wood or coal. Her son, James Daniel DANNY BLOXTON, lived there at the time I took these notes. (This youtube interview with DANNY took place when he was 77 years old - uploaded Oct 2009 - he was born July 27, 1930, so video made in 2007). When "James Daniel Bloxton, 21, of Hardy" enlisted in the USAF in November 1951, his mother was listed as "Hester Bloxton", not "Ruth".

i. JUANITA HESTER BLOXTON (b. 1921, Sprague?, Raleigh County, WV; d. age 16, 1937, McKendree Hospital, WV of Scarlet Fever kidney complications – all the other children had it at the same time, but her kidneys were weak, so she didn't survive.)

ii. BEULAH ALBERTA BLOXTON PENNINGTON 304-586-9273, 3231 Winfield Road, Winfield, WV 25213 (b. 17 AUG 1924, Sprague (or nearby Skeleton) (born at home, so conflicting 2 records), Raleigh Co., residence Winfield, Putnam Co., WV - d. 2000) (m. 31 AUG 1951)
+ LEROY RAY PENNINGTON, b. 12 MAY 1924, Charleston, Kanawha, WV, d. 7 OCT 1985, Winfield, WV). Member, Red Star Baptist Church; never transferred letter to Winfield Baptist Church – more confined to home now. Beulah went to England in 1992 – visited Pennington "Muncaster" Castle in the Lake District, also visited Bristol, Bath & Scotland. Traveling by rail – kind of a rat race -- people jam to get in doors – once you're seated, it's all right. Beulah and Leroy Pennington had:

1) ADAM KYLE HIGGINS (b. 13 MAR 1987)

iii. VERNOR "ALFRED" BLOXTON (b. 16 MAR 1927, Hilltop, Fayette, WV) (m. 14 NOV 1955, Hilltop Methodist Church Parsonage, Hilltop, WV, to
+ SALLIE ANN UNDERWOOD, b. 12 NOV 1934, Glen Morgan, WV to CRYSTAL LENA MARTIN (b. 1907; d. 10 OCT 1997, age 90, of Oak Hill) & GEORGE ROBERT UNDERWOOD - sister, Mary Betty Jean U. Humphrey (80).) Sallie still attends nearby Packs Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Arthur is disabled with arthritis now and doesn't get to church much anymore. Alfred "plays great piano," according to Kelli, but Alfred thinks she plays better than he does -– has played at several churches over the years -- & harmonica by ear; retired 1946-1985 (39 yrs.) from C&O Railroad, Train Crew Dispatcher, plus 15-20 other clerical positions – Ticket Agent, Yard Work, etc. - including 3+ yrs. in between in the Air Force as USAF Classification Clerk and other clerical positions. Alfred was stationed at Ft. Worth, Austin, and San Antonio, TX; six months in Margate, England on the English Channel (20 miles N of Dover), and 2-3 mos. in Colorado.) In 1956 he bought a two-story 12-room house with a ½ basement in the coal mining town of Red Star, WV (2 miles from Hilltop – the nearest Post Office is in Glen Jean, WV) from bachelor Robert L. "Bob" Legg, who died late 1960's or early 1970's. Bob ran the busy "Dog Wagon" restaurant in Thurmond, WV, a boom town, where Alfred started out on the railroad. (Today, only one Amtrack passenger train runs each direction three times a week, but 9-10 trains a day used to run in each direction, and they had more business than Cincinnati, OH.) At one time, Alfred's four children lived there, and his mom lived upstairs, like having her own apartment. Their home has not been used as a boarding house since 1936-1940, but it was built in 1900-1906, and many Star Coal Company miners stayed there. The Star Coal Company Store was nearby. Alfred worked at a company store in Harvey, WV, as a grocery clerk for ten months right out of high school.

Sallie still attends nearby Packs Branch Missionary Baptist Church.
