When John Bernard Bloxton, Sr., 80, was born on August 4, 1900, in Fayette County, West Virginia, his father, Robert, was 52 and his mother, Lucinda, was 36. At age 27, he married Dorothy May Hicks (21) on July 8, 1928, Oak Hill, Fayette County, West Virginia. They had seven children in 12 years. He died in March 1981 in Oak Hill, West Virginia, and was buried there.

John Bernard Bloxton, Sr. was obviously named after his father, Robert Jefferson "Bob' Bloxton's, brother of the same name who died at age nine; so technically, he should have been John Bernard Bloxton II, his son should have been John Bernard Bloxton III, and his grandson should have been John Bernard Bloxton IV.

When Bernard registered for WWI on September 12, 1918, age 18, he was of medium height, slender build, blue eyes, brown hair; residence: Hill Top, Fayette, WV; occupation: Teaming for New River Company, Prudence, Fayette, WV. He signed his name: "Bernard John Bloxton" and he was called "Bernard", so whether or not he changed the order of his names on his birth certificate, this appears to be the name he preferred for himself. However, he named his son "John Bernard Bloxton, Jr.", necessitating that his legal name be "Sr." to keep that link between father and son over the generations to come. His son's gravestone also has "Jr." engraved there.

John Bernard (pronounced BUR-nerd, rather than Ber-NARD) Bloxton, Sr. was the seventh child of Robert Jefferson Bloxton, and his father's fourth child with his father's second wife, Lucinda Caroline "Cindy" (Barton) Bloxton. He was affectionately called "Paw Paw" by his grandchildren.
