MR. JAMES S. BLOXTON KILLED AT HIS SAWMILL IN STAFFORD COUNTY.
Fredericksburg, VA, Wednesday, July 26, 1899
Mr. James S. Bloxton, a sawmill and lumber dealer, was almost instantly killed at his sawmill on Potomac run in Stafford County this evening. While sawing a log, it became fastened on the carriage, and in adjusting it, was thrown off, striking Mr. Bloxton under the left jaw. He exclaimed, "Oh, God!" and was dead. It was the last log in the mill. Mr. Bloxton was 47 years of age and leaves a widow, Louisa Fritter Bloxton, and seven children. He was well known throughout this section.
One newspaper account stated that he died at 1:30 pm, not later in the evening. Another newspaper account stated that the log hit him over the heart, not under his left jaw. Compare story below (copy of original article under gravestone photo):

A DISTRESSING ACCIDENT CAUSES THE DEATH OF MR. J. S. BLOXTON
Wednesday afternoon, about 1:30 o'clock, a distressing accident occurred at the saw mill of Mr. James S. Bloxton in Stafford County. While the last log at the mill was being sawed, by some mishap, it caught on the carriage, and in an endeavor to unfasten it, Mr. Bloxton caught hold of one end, and an employee, by his direction, seized the other. The log suddenly left the carriage and, with great force, struck Mr. Bloxton over the heart. With the exclamation, "Oh, God!" he fell back dead, after which he was taken to his home in Falmouth. The deceased was a good citizen, and his sudden death greatly shocked the community and caused a general expression of sympathy for his heartbroken wife and seven children. He was about 49 years of age and, a few years ago, united with the Falmouth Baptist Church from which the funeral service, which was largely attended, was conducted by Rev. J. P. Stump of this city, Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The interment was in the cemetery at Falmouth.
James Strawther Bloxton (middle name confirmed by his great-granddaughter, Brenda Bickerstaff-Stanley, granddaughter of his son, William STRAWTHER Bloxton), was the son of William Ashby Bloxton, Jr. and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Burton Bloxton, who is buried next to James, and they share a grave marker.
