Leona May (Simons) Henson, age 86, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Tuesday, August 28, 2012 in her home in Waverly, N.Y.
Leona was born on September 11, 1925 in Elmira, N.Y., the daughter of Pearley and Gertrude Clara (Wilcox) Simons. She was a devoted loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-greatgrandmother. Her life revolved around her family, especially her grandchildren. She spent most of her life as a care-giver for numerous children including most of her own grandchildren. Leona was a Girl Scout leader for many years. She also served as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Henson Family Reunion for the past 38 years. She enjoyed gardening and scrapbooking and was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church.
Leona is survived by eight of her 12 children: four sons Michael Henson, Donald Henson, Keith (Millie) Henson, and Glenn Henson all of Waverly, and four daughters Robin (Harold) Corby of Silver Springs, Fla., Terri (Duane) Richter of Lockwood, N.Y., and Janet Sandroni and Kim (Robert) Fuller both of Waverly, N.Y., one stepson Robert Hines of Warren, MI and one stepdaughter Diane Allard. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren: Mickala Henson, Emily UpDyke, Christopher Henson, Haley Henson, Tammy Cattano, Toni Thompson, Shannon Wittig, Christa Yeakel, Melissa Ellis, Harold Corby III, Jessica Thomas, Barbara Goble, Ashley Henson, Joey Sandroni and Brittany Sandroni, 5 step-grandchildren: Bonnie Isaac, Linda Rosado, Bobby Hines, Amber Hines and Mike Rice, 20 greatgrandchildren, 17 step-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters also survive: Eloise Card of Camden, N.Y. and Lily Newton of Willseyville, N.Y .
Leona was predeceased by her husband Delbert LaVerne Henson in 2006, her parents Pearley and Gertrude Clara (Wilcox) Simons, her sister Mary Jane, two brothers: Leonard and Claude Simons, two sons: Dennis and Paul Henson, two daughters: Linda Wilson and Barbara Henson, and two grandchildren: Janelle and Paul Henson.
Memorial services will be held at the Waverly United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 8. Calling hours will be from 2-4 p.m. Services will be at 4pm with Pastor Ann Canfield officiating. A dinner and fellowship will follow. Burial will be at the Glenwood Cemetery in Waverly, N.Y.
